A fix for the Garmin Forerunner 955 and 255 screen issue is in the works

If you notice your Garmin Forerunner 955 or 255 watch showing a black horizontal line on the screen that moves back and forth, don’t panic. It seems to be due to a software bug.

The error was first reported on Garmin Forums end of August. For some users it appears during long runs, for others during bike rides. Again, there are those who report seeing the dotted line on the screen when reading notifications. So it’s a bit random when he can appear.

The line is horizontal and runs from one edge of the screen to the opposite edge. Its location changes on the screen. Sometimes it appears in the middle of the screen, but it can also appear at the top or bottom. The thickness also varies.

Users are seeing the bug intermittently and it can appear on both original watch faces and other watch faces. So changing the watch face on your device won’t solve anything.

Scrolling down then back refreshes the display and deletes the row. If you do nothing, it will disappear on its own after a short time, usually between 10 and 30 seconds. So you can just leave it and go about your day, it won’t stay there permanently.

Many users of Forerunner 955 and Solar editions of the same are reporting the issue on Facebook forums and various Garmin threads. Several screenshots of the line issue have been posted on social media. Some Forerunner 255 and 255 Music owners are also seeing the black line but the issue seems to be more prevalent for those with the 955.

It doesn’t seem to be firmware dependent, as users with different software versions report it. And it only seems to affect these two watches – there are no reports of other Garmin devices affected by the bug.

Oddly enough, if you take a screenshot while the line is there, it won’t show up in the image. So it may be something that is not in the actual screen memory. Or maybe taking the screenshot solves the problem.

Garmin says they’re working on a fix

Garmin has acknowledged that there is an issue and they are working on a solution. That said, it’s been about a month since this was first reported, so it’s taking them a while to find out what’s causing it.

The good news is that it appears to be a software rather than a hardware issue. For now, there’s not much you can do about it except wait for the update. It’s a visual annoyance, but luckily users report no other side effects.

Hopefully the fix will come soon. We’ll keep an eye out for upcoming Alpha and Beta firmware updates for the Forerunner 255 and 955 and let you know when a fix is available.
