Epson WorkForce DS-790WN review: Scanning that covers all angles

Epson’s WorkForce DS-790WN is ideal for businesses that don’t want to dedicate a host system to their scanning operations, as with a standard USB 3 port, this desktop model has built-in Gigabit LAN and services 802.11n wireless. Its fast scanning speed of 45ppm for both color and monochrome documents means it can scan your documents in record time and, at £499, its price is ideal for those on a tight budget.

The scanner is designed to handle heavy demand, with a daily duty cycle of 7,000 sheets and a 100-page automatic document feeder. It’s up to the task, too: its sturdy input paper guides hold our large sheaves of bank statements firmly in place while scanning, and its long paper mode can scan fan-folded documents and banners up to six meters. long.

Large 10.9cm color touchscreen is perfect for standalone scanning with icons to send documents directly to computers, network folders, FTP servers, email, local USB drive, storage providers cloud and Windows PCs using WSD (Web Services for Devices). Computers are displayed on the touchscreen once they have installed Epson software, while other network destinations are activated from the scanner’s web console.

For direct email scans, we configured our SMTP mail server and added email contacts (up to 300 are supported), after which they appeared on the touch screen for quick access. Cloud scanning is set up from the Epson Connect portal, and after registering the scanner, we could create destinations for Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and EverNote.

Networked over Gigabit Ethernet, installation on our Windows 10 PCs was quick. A single utility handles device discovery, driver downloads, installation of Epson’s Scan 2 and Document Capture Pro utilities, and checking for firmware updates.

The Scan 2 utility provides many scanning controls and is loaded when acquiring scans from third-party products using the TWAIN driver. You can select resolution, color, grayscale, or monochrome scans, document and content skew correction, simplex or duplex operations, and blank page skipping.

Advanced settings offer text enhancement, brightness and contrast controls and punch hole removal, as well as adding a watermark and an option to send images to two destinations simultaneously. In addition to local and network folder destinations, you can select BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PDF, and sPDF output formats and save settings as quick access profiles.

Epson’s Document Capture Pro provides excellent scan management tools. You can create a range of jobs including scan settings, output sizes and destinations, job separation using options such as barcodes, patch codes or OCR detection zones, and save them for one-click access. Each PC appears on the scanner’s touchscreen so that scans can be sent directly to them, and assigning button numbers to selected jobs on each PC also makes them available for selection.

Performance is superb, with our stack of 30 bank statements dispatched quickly at the quoted 45ppm speed for grayscale and color scans at 200dpi and 300dpi resolutions. Upping the resolution to 600dpi also yielded respectable speeds of 12.4ppm.

However, you won’t need the higher resolution for archiving documents, as the 200dpi output quality is suitable for these tasks, with Epson’s OCR services correctly converting every word in our statements to 6pt fonts. . The scanner was very quiet when scanning our test documents and its paper handling was near perfect, with only the occasional waybill causing the ultrasonic jam detection to activate.

The WorkForce DS-790WN covers all scanning angles, making it an excellent choice for businesses that want standalone scanning services. Its touchscreen makes walk-in scanning easy, Epson provides plenty of scan management tools and delivers exceptional speed and quality.
