Google WiFi gets a surprise refresh with a tweaked look and a lower price

Google Wifi got an unexpected refresh this week, giving European customers one of the best mesh Wi-Fi routers around, along with some cosmetic tweaks and a healthy price cut.

The new refresh was first released in the US in October 2020 and saw a substantial drop of $259 for the Google Wifi Router with two coverage extenders down to $199, a reduction of $60. The price drop in the UK is comparable (about £30) to the access points/routers $60 price drop from the first generation Google Wifi router.

Both generations of Google Wifi are priced lower than Google Nest Wifi, which is the company’s most premium line of smart home products. But that doesn’t mean Google Wifi has been anything less than one of our top-rated mesh routers for several years in a row, so it’s no surprise that Google wants to bring Google Wifi to the European market.

A Google representative told TechRadar that Google Wifi Gen 2 provides an “enhanced work-from-home experience [and] expanded favorite activities by adding support for Microsoft Teams, Slack, Webex, GoToMeeting.”

The representative also highlighted new additions to the Google Home app, particularly the new Network Insight feature that can help users determine when and why their internet speed is slowing down.

Beyond that, there aren’t many dramatic changes in spec other than price, but given how good Google Wifi is, it’s probably best not to mess with a good thing.

Australia loses Google Wifi – for now

Google Wifi also appears to have disappeared entirely from Google’s Australian product page, which strongly indicates that Google is gearing up to release the new refresh in that market as well.

Although we’ve followed up on Google’s missing Google Wifi listing on its Australia product page, we haven’t heard back yet, so all we can do is speculate that an Australian version will likely arrive very soon. soon. When we have more clarity on the Australian market situation, we will be sure to update this page.
