How to connect and use a PS5 controller on your PC

The PS5 controller, or the DualSense, is a beautiful machine that has overtaken the PS5 console in popularity. Besides the PS5 itself, the PS5 controller is also compatible with PC.

Connecting the PS5 controller to your PC with USB

The easiest way to connect your PS5 controller to your PC is to use a USB cable. Windows is able to automatically detect your controller, so you can skip the hassle of installing drivers.

You will need a USB-C to USB-A cable because the PS5 controller has a USB-C port. Of course, if your computer has a USB-C port, you can also use a USB-C to USB-C cable.

  1. Connect the USB-C end of the cable to your PS5 controller.
  2. Connect the USB-A end of the cable to your PC.
  3. Windows will now inform you that it has detected the controller and your controller will power on.

It is more or less that! Your controller is now usable and you can continue and play your games.

If you want to take advantage of features like adaptive triggers, be sure to update your PS5 controller. An outdated controller will still retain its basic functions, but the controller’s immersive features require the latest firmware updates.

Connecting the PS5 controller to your PC with Bluetooth

If you don’t want to deal with wires and play remotely, you can also connect your PS5 controller via Bluetooth.

To do this, your PC must be equipped with Bluetooth. If your PC doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth, you can add it to your PC using a Bluetooth adapter.

  1. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, go to Settings.
  2. Click on Add device.
  3. To select Bluetooth.
  4. On your PS5 controller, hold the PS and Create for three seconds until the controller begins to flash blue. The Create button is identical to the Share button on DualShock 4 controllers.
  5. On your computerin the Add device window, select your controller. Your controller will probably be under the name wireless controller.

    Once you select the controller, it stops flashing and glows solid blue.

  6. Click on Fact.


Note that your controller will use its battery when you use it wirelessly. You will need to recharge it from time to time to make it work. Playing with a wired connection will not only drain your controller’s battery, but will also recharge it.

Using and customizing your PS5 controller with Steam

Steam is the most popular PC gaming storefront and its Big Picture mode lets you navigate the interface with your controller. Steam supports the PS5 controller, and through Steam you can calibrate and configure your PS5 controller for optimal performance in PC games.

  1. Connect your PS5 controller to your PC.
  2. Launch Steam.
  3. In Steam, navigate to Steam menu.
  4. Click on Settings. The Settings window will open.
  5. In the Settings window, select Controller.
  6. Click on General controller settings.
  7. With your controller, activate PlayStation setup support.


You should be able to see the name of your controller under controllers detected as a PlayStation 5 controller. With Steam, you have access to many settings for your controller. An example is the color of the controller light.

  1. Hover over it PlayStation 5 controller in Controllers detected.
  2. On the right, select Preferences.
  3. Switch Drive slot LED for On.
  4. Adjust it Controller light color to your favorite color. Your controller color should change in real time.
