How to Find Your Phone’s IP Address on Android or iPhone

Need to find your phone’s IP address? You may know how to find your IP address on your Mac or Windows computer, but what about your mobile device?

We’re here to help you find the IP address of your iPhone or Android phone. Let’s see how to show both your public and private IP address on your phone, what these addresses mean, and how to keep them private.

What is an IP address?

First, we need to explain what an IP address is so you know how to use the information you find. IP stands for Internet Protocol; an IP address is a numbered label assigned to each device that connects to a network. So, if you’re wondering if your phone has an IP address, the answer is yes, as long as you’re online.

Checking a device’s IP address helps you identify it both on your home network and on the Internet at large. In fact, there are two IP addresses, public and private, to identify every device, including your phone:

  • A public IP address (Where global IP address) is how the rest of the internet sees any device on your network. Because this is a specific network, your global IP address will be the same whether you’re using your phone, your office computer, or another device at home.
    • By analogy, consider that no matter who sends a letter from your house, it always has the same return address.
  • A private IP address (Where local IP address) identifies a device on your own network. A single device can have a certain address on a network, but that same address can also be used on other private networks.
    • Continuing the analogy above, think about the fact that even if you live at 502 Oak Street, another family living at 502 Maple Street is also valid. The address number is not limited to any street in the whole world.

Also, when you check your IP address, you will likely see both an IPv4 address and an IPv6 address. IPv4 addresses are shorter, but due to the huge number of devices connected to the Internet, the world lacks them. IPv6 addresses aren’t as easy to read, but there are enough to go around for a long time.

In most cases, IPv4 is still the primary address used, but IPv6 will phase them out over time.

How to find your phone’s private IP address

As mentioned above, when you want to know your phone’s IP address, there are two values to check. Let’s first see how to find your mobile phone’s private IP address on your home network.

How to Find Your Android Phone’s Private IP Address

Below are the steps to find your Android phone’s local IP address, shown on a Pixel device running Android 11. The location of the information and menu names may differ slightly depending on your Android phone:

  2. If you’re not already connected to your Wi-Fi network, tap its name and confirm that you’re connected.
  3. Tap the network name and expand it Advanced section.
  4. Here you will find your IP adress and further information under Network details. If available, the IPv6 addresses appear at the bottom of the page.

How to Find Your iPhone’s Private IP Address

To find your local IP address on an iPhone, here’s what to do:

  1. Head toward Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. If you’re not already connected to your home network, tap on it and connect now.
  3. Tap your network name to open its options and view more information.
  4. Here you will see the IP adress field listed under IPv4 address on your mind.

Depending on your network, you may see a IPv6 address header below, containing the alternate address of your device.

How to Check Your Phone’s Public IP Address

Now that you know your phone’s private IP address on your network, let’s see how to check your device’s global IP address.

Your public IP address is easy to find since any device on the internet can see it. So you can visit a host of websites that will show your public IP address instantly, right on your phone. It’s the same no matter which carrier you use, so there’s no specific way to check the IP address of a T-Mobile phone against a device on Verizon, for example.

Just open Chrome on your Android phone or Safari on your iPhone (or whatever browser you use). Then go to a public IP address checker website, such as one of these:

You will notice that some of these sites also display your location, the name of your ISP, and similar information. Indeed, your IP address contains this information. You can’t determine someone’s exact name and address from their IP address, but it limits their location to one city.

Similar sites allow you to trace any IP address to see its location. We will discuss IP privacy in more detail below.

Understand dynamic and static IP addresses

You should know that most of the time the public and private IP addresses you found for your phone are not set in stone. For your global and local IP address, your phone probably shows a dynamic IP address.

This means that after some time or when a device restarts, that device or your entire network will get a new IP address. Conversely, a static IP address does not change over time like this.

Dynamic public IP addresses are easier for your ISP (like Comcast or Verizon) to manage because they can mix and match them as needed. You can request a static IP address from your ISP, but these usually cost extra. They are not necessary for home users unless you host a server that others access from outside your network.

For private IP addresses, your router dynamically distributes them to devices on your network using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). In practice, this means that when you connect a new device to your home Wi-Fi, you don’t have to manually assign it an IP address and keep track of everything yourself.

You can assign static private IP addresses using your router and various device settings if you wish. But again, this is really only something advanced users need to worry about. Doing it incorrectly could cause problems, like IP conflicts, and become more problematic than it’s worth.

How to Hide Your Phone’s IP Address

After finding your current IP address and learning that it reveals your location, you might worry about the privacy implications of this. If so, one way to obfuscate your public IP is to start using a VPN (virtual private network).

Essentially, connecting to a VPN provider allows you to route all of your traffic through their servers. To the outside world, it looks like your traffic is coming from somewhere else. This hides your IP address and can make it harder for your browser to connect to you or your location.

A VPN isn’t a one-click bulletproof privacy solution, but it’s an easy way to hide your public IP address in most scenarios. Remember that there are also other ways to hide your location while browsing the web.
