PORTLAND, OR — A man who smashed windows and security cameras at a Planned Parenthood clinic in southwest Oregon because he opposed abortion has pleaded guilty to two counts of having violates federal law on free access to clinic entrances.
Devin Kruse, 27, of Grants Pass, Oregon, pleaded guilty on Monday, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.
Kruse admitted to breaking five security cameras, a window and a sign at Grants Pass Clinic on November 23, according to his plea agreement. He also said he returned several days later and threw a concrete block through a window, demolished an intercom system and smashed light bulbs, documents show.
He told arresting officers that all Planned Parenthood facilities were to be closed, as per the agreement.
“The First Amendment does not permit individuals to violate the civil rights of others. In this case, Mr. Kruse’s destructive and intimidating acts prevented women from accessing vital reproductive health and pregnancy services,” Natalie Wight, a U.S. attorney from Oregon, said in a statement.
At a sentencing scheduled for early next year, prosecutors will recommend he face two years probation, one for each count. He also agreed to pay restitution to Planned Parenthood in an amount to be determined.
