Netgear firmware update locks users out of their $600 mesh router

Do you have a Netgear Orbi router configured to receive automatic firmware updates? Well, Netgear has acknowledged that a recent update is preventing users from accessing the admin panel and locking you out completely

The problematic firmware that has been released is v4.6.8.2, originally released on April 27 and affects customers of the Orbi RBK85x and RBK75x Series Mesh Wi-Fi 6 products. Issues were quickly reported on Netgear’s own forums as well only on Reddit, and the update is still available for manual download through Netgear Support.

Netgear said on its Real-Time Status page, “We are aware of an issue affecting the Orbi RBK85x and RBK75x Series Mesh WiFi 6 systems.” “Some customers can no longer access or manage their Orbi systems through the Orbi app or web UI. A factory reset usually fixes this problem. We are working to understand the root cause and identify an alternative recovery method that does not require a factory reset. »

According to internet reports, consumers were able to regain full operation by calling Netgear support professionals, who were able to send solutions to affected customers with a valid serial number. A larger version of the updated software is expected soon.

These kits cost between 700 and 1000 EUR. You would expect better than that, huh?
