Crystal Dynamics has released a patch for Marvel’s Avengers, fixing the issue that caused players’ IP addresses to appear on screen, while sharing a new Tweeter. The rest of this article has been left as originally published.

Marvel’s Avengers has had a tough time since launching in August of last year. Following a lukewarm critical response, the game also struggled to maintain a large fan base in the months following its release. That said, developer Crystal Dynamics has put a lot of effort into improving the state of the game and providing more content for players. Now more bad news has arrived in superhero gaming, as a new patch in Marvel’s Avengers is displaying users’ IP address on screen.

Instance of player IP addresses displayed in-game was first spotted by a Twitter user @Cyael. This report was later confirmed by Forbes writer Paul Tassi. After downloading the new patch, players will notice a bunch of on-screen text while playing Marvel’s Avengers. This includes their username, date and time, and most importantly, their IP address. Of course, an IP address is incredibly sensitive information, and posting it in an environment where others can see it (like a live stream) can be extremely harmful.

The bug surfaced with the release of today’s content update, which added a new boss and in-game event. Developer Crystal Dynamics has acknowledged being aware of the issue. However, their tweet about it simply refers to it as a “floating text string”, which puts things lightly, to say the least. There is currently no fix for the issue, but with its severity, hopefully a fix will be available soon.

Until Crystal Dynamics releases a fix for the bug that causes IP addresses to display onscreen in Marvel’s Avengers, we advise players to exercise extreme caution when playing the game. It’s currently unclear if the bug affects all or just a selected group of players. For future updates to this story and more Marvel’s Avengers news, Shacknews has you covered.
